The Bald eagles are most abundant in Alaska and found only in North America. Our Alaskan population has been estimated around 30,000. The eagle fledgings lack the distinctive white head and tail of the adult bald eagles and as a result are sometimes confused with the golden eagles. The mature birds can have a wing span of up to 7.5 feet and weigh up to 14 pounds. Some of the best bald eagles photos are taken on Alaska's coastline and islands. As a result, your best bet for eagle watching is among the islands of Southeast Alaska. In addition, most Alaskan bald eagles spend the winter in southern Alaska so even the winter months are a great time to visit. Some eagles do leave the state during cold months; however, over 30,000 bald eagles congregate in the late fall / early winter in southern Alaska to feed on spawned-out salmon. |
